My Son’s view: What is old, is new to you…
With Jill crawling around and playing with the old baby toys, Jake thinks that they are new again. Of course I know he would not have memory of being that young, but I find it interesting that this can happen to even grownups. If you are away from something long enough, or it is out of your mind for a long time, that item can be new to you again. It could be music, a book, food, or something else.
Jake has split his time playing with Jill’s toys as his toys. He then complains when she wants to play with his toys. We have tried to explain that she sees you playing with her toys and the his toys, and she thinks she could play with all of the toys. This has yet to sink in with him, yet he has started to share his toys. That has been a big step.
The other side of this is when we have visitors. He has to show everyone what he has and is playing with like he just got it and was very proud of it. This was really evident when my cousin, Trevor and wife were up to go to the clinic and Jake had to show Mary all of his movies and toys. He was really proud of them.
I have noticed this in myself with movies and music the most. There have been some old movies I had not seen in quite a while and have started to watch them while running. They seem almost new to me. My challenge, is to find something that I have not done or read in a long time and start it back up. It could be interesting what is dug up.

Running Mondays: Staying focused over busy weeks
Well, life threw a little curve ball at our family this week and the training continued. I was able to stay focused and run the miles called for by my training plan. The Friday night and Saturday morning runs were the toughest. I knew I was going to Mason City to help Mom and Dad so I did my usual night run on Friday. On the weekends I usually run during nap time for the kids. Seeing how I was not going to be able to do that and it was going to be a long day, I decided to wake up early and run.
I really did not feel the effects from the runs until the drive home Saturday night. It may have been the seat time in the car, or the chairs in the hospital as well, but I hurt. My hips, legs and back were sore, and it was not muscle soreness, it was joint pain. I took it easy on the 6 mile run for Sunday and it felt good to get outside and get some fresh air.
This week is looking a little busy as well. We have family members coming up to go to the Mayo Clinic and I plan to keep running. It also looks like there will be snow, so running outside may not be in the picture. So I need to stay focused and stick to the plan. It has worked so far.
This we the mileage goes up, and different workouts are added in. On Tuesday there is a speed workout, which is running 3 miles at under 7:30 per mile pace. Then on Thursday a tempo run of 5 miles is added. This run is at half marathon goal pace for 5 miles.

Home at last (Update for Dad)
Dad is now home and resting. His numbers were even better today and was is good spirits since he was getting out of the room. He has made some peace with the cats and they are happy that he is home. Thanks to Dan and Rachel for being there to help Mom and Dad get home. The next step is to contact the Mayo Clinic and work on getting in there. They plan to come up here Monday night so they can beat any snow storm that may be coming. I’ll have some more tomorrow when they know what the timeline is.

Dad will be at home today, resting and calming the cats. I’ll have a better update later today.

Back home from Mason City
It has been a long day. I was up early to run and Jake was up as well. Then I helped get everyone settled and I was off to see Mom and Dad in the hospital. They were tired and ready to hear a plan from the doctor. Mom and Dad decided last night to get a second opinion from Mayo, and were getting the paperwork ready. I helped with that, and once we met with the doctor we decided on a plan. I could see some relief on Dad and Mom’s face when we were taking about the plan. They had been sitting there without a clear care plan, and felt like they were not going in any direction. Once we talked it over and decided on the next steps, the mood got better.
Dad had a great number of visitors today, and thanks to all of those you have posted on Mom’s, Annette’s and my facebook updates. I’ll be in touch with Mom on when Dad is discharged and the timeline for them coming up to Rochester. I will also be posting updates as I can. I will be getting back to my regular blog posts as well, but will focus on Dad and his recovery. Again, thanks for all of the prayers and well wishes.

Saturday night update for Dad

He had quite a number of visitors today. The plan is to be discharged tomorrow, contact the afib clinic at Mayo, and get in as soon as possible. That should be either Monday or Tuesday. Dad is in better spirits this afternoon. I helped Mom return a car back home and play with the cats. I’ll be heading home tonight and will keep updating on Dad tomorrow.

Saturday afternoon update
Well, we finally have seen the doctors. More than 24 hours after the angiogram. The plan is to have the meds on board for 4 weeks, then come back to see if the rhythm is better. If so then they will try to shock it back. No lifevest, and we are going to Mayo Clinic for a second opinion as soon as possible. Dad should be released tomorrow. We are working on getting everything lined up to get the information moving.
Blood pressure is down, pulse is down, and we have a plan. Things are looking good. Thanks for all of the well wishes and prayers.

Saturday update on Dad
Really no new news. Blood pressure is down, spirits are up. After a discussion with the nurse last night my parents have decided to go to Mayo Clinic. Dad has been up since about 5 with tests, rounds and breakfast. Mom is doing well enough so I am here to help with whatever they need. So far so good.

Friday night update on Dad
Dad is in good spirits and Mom is sounding tired. His medical team has been a little helpful and made a suggestion of wearing a LifeVest. Mom and Kathie have been discussing that option. Right now we are really leaning towards trying to get Dad up to Rochester in the Mayo Clinic. I will be heading down tomorrow after I run in the morning. Dad wants to thank everyone for the well wishes and prayers. He can’t access his email right now to respond, so I’ll do my best. I’ll have more updates tomorrow.
Friday February 17, 2012 — 11:26 AM
He went in early this morning, and a blockage was found. Since his heart rhythm is not what they want to see, and it is in a spot that is not life threatening, they are going to wait for the medication to lower the blood pressure and hopefully get the rhythm back in line. Mom, Dad and the doctors will discuss more this afternoon. I plan to head down tomorrow to help Mom in anyway and will give an update as I can. Again, thanks for the prayers and well wishes.
